Join Prairie Grass Cafe and #SheddTheStraw for Earth Day

Think about your last lunch or dinner at a restaurant.  Did you use a plastic straw in your cup? I would be willing to bet that the majority of us had a plastic straw in our drinks.

SheddTheStraw lowresAccording to studies, Americans use approximately 500 million plastic straws every day.  Did you know that a single use plastic straw never disappear - that means that they don't disintegrate, degrade or go away.  Those convenient plastic straws end of harming many animals in the waters, lakes, and seas.

Prairie Grass Café has long supported environmental causes, local farmers and many important causes.  Starting on Earth Day, April 22, Prairie Grass Café is joining the #SheddTheStraw campaign.  Shedd Aquarium is encouraging everyone to pitch the plastic straws for biodegradable alterative.

Beginning on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, Prairie Grass Cafe will no longer offer straws to customers unless the customer requests a straw-straws will be paper and/or biodegradable.

  1. Good grief - something I never gave any thought to. And to think we use 500 million straws in ONE DAY in the U.S. is unbelievable ... Very interesting.

  2. This is a great initiative. I just wrote a piece for Earth Day about great socially-conscious products, and one of them was a glass straw you could carry around with you. It's amazing how many straws we use in one day!

  3. I never knew that. Makes me rethink using them. I guess my dad has the right idea he never uses a straw.

  5. Plastic straws are horrible for the environment and so many animals. Have you ever seen the stainless, reusable straws. We love them!

  6. That's a great idea. I love that they are doing that. We no longer buy or take straws. That's how we do our part.

  8. This sounds like such a great initiative. I always stick a straw in my drink without thinking when I'm in a restaurant. I'm going to try not to do it in future!
